Which State has the highest literacy rate in India?

Kerala is the state with the highest literacy rate in the whole country. As per the census of 2011, Kerala’s literacy rate is 93.91 per cent. In the state equal opportunity for education is given to male and females. Every person in the state is aware of the importance of education and its outcomes.


Reason for high literacy

  • The roots of Kerala’s education system is since the 19th century.
  • The queen of Trivandrum in 1817 once said that “The state should defray the entire cost of education of its people in order that there might be no backwardness in the spread of enlightenment among them, that by diffusion of education they might become better subjects and public servants and that the reputation of the state might be advanced thereby”.

  • Thirty-seven per cent of the state’s budgets go to the education department
  • The state supports 12,271 schools.
